What's so special about gold pearl?
Pearls are hard, roundish objects found inside living shelled mollusks,eg clams. They, the pearls, are made primarily of calcium carbonate, the same substance that makes up limestone, chalk, egg shells, and mollusk shells.
What makes pearls special isn't the material they're made of, but how it was made. When a bit of dust or some other irritant uncovers its way within a mollusk, the mollusk will continually coat it with a substance, possibly to cut back the irritation. While under ordinary circumstances any mollusk can produce "pearls", many aren't valued as gemstones. Nacre, which is what nacreous pearls are made of, is a substance produced by often 2 groups of bivalves or clams. It has an iridescent sheen, like mother-of-pearl, which is really nacre.
Perfection at a Cost
Even rarer are perfectly round pearls. Irrespective of shape, natural pearls take ages to grow.
Commercial pressures of demand drove the development of cultured pearls. In pearl culturing, a pre-shaped foreign body is inserted into the mollusks for nacre coating. The cultured pearl bodies are of a significant size, so that it only takes a relatively short time for a pearl to reach marketable size. In theory, it should be possible to make pearls of numerous shapes -- like stars and hourglasses, for the sake of caprice -- but in practice, spheres are the most popular. The end result is ideal as shape goes, and they are cheaper. On the downside, they are much less valuable, and not actually as beautiful.
Setting Pearls
These beautiful gems are used in all sorts of jewelry. Pearl necklaces, pearl rings, pearl earrings, you say it. They make superb gifts, and can even come in different colours. Colored pearls are rarer and so more valuable; examples are black Tahitian pearls, blue pearls, and pink pearls. Whatever you set them in, yellow gold or white gold or sterling silver, pearls are wonderful treasures.
