White Gold Or Platinum - That Is The Question
So, you've decided to buy an engagement ring.
One of the multitude of factors you need to consider is what metal you would like your engagement ring to be in.
You know that your partner likes silver colour.
You've looked in jewellery shop windows and have seen that you can buy either white gold or platinum.
Platinum, however, seems to be more expensive. Why?
Let's take a step back. Imagine gold, when it is mined from the ground, is of course yellow in colour. This is why you see gold nuggets, gold bullion etc etc. To produce the white gold used in jewellery manufacture, this yellow gold is mixed with a series of alloys to produce a grey-ish material, which is cast for diamond rings. Part of the finishing process for white gold rings is to dip this grey-ish material into rhodium plating which provides the lovely chrome finish. However, it is this rhodium plating which can wear off as time goes by (say 12-18 months), and so you can hear of some ladies complaining that their diamond ring is tarnishing.
Platinum, on the other hand, is 95% pure. It is the densest of all the precious metals and so has a lovely quality feel. It doesn't tarnish. It is rare. In fact, if you took all the platinum used in precious metal jewellery in the world today, melted it down and poured into an olympic sized swimming pool, then it would scarcely cover your ankles. These desirable properties along with its scarceness, means than it commands a price premium.
Yes, 18kt white gold and platinum diamond rings will look the same when you first buy them. However, the platinum ring will be heavier. It will also maintain its lustre over time and provide a wonderful setting for your diamonds.
The popularity of platinum has boomed in recent years, and doesn't show any signs of abating.
